People Doing Cool Stuff
Boniuk
Center The Boniuk Center was
founded in 2004 and is dedicated to promoting tolerance and
understanding between peoples of diverse cultural, ethnic, and
religious backgrounds. These folks are truly visionaries and
offer us a glimpse of what the world could look like free of hatred
and prejudice.
KPFT
Our local Paciifica radio
station. Keeping the airwaves free for democracy.
Suneeta
Vaswani is a magnificent Houston chef (and good friend),
specializing in the cuisine of India. Suneeta has two
wonderful cookbooks out which I highly recommend, Complete Book
of Indian Cooking – 350 recipes from the regions of India &
Easy Indian Cooking. Both of her cookbooks have earned a
place on the shelf in my kitchen. Her recipes remain true to her
heritage and are presented in a format that is easy to understand
and prepare.
Restaurants
& Food
Brunchbeat.com
Brunch
beat is the brain child of Martha Beaudry who has taken on the
mighty task of cataloging and rating the numerous wonderful
brunches to be found in Houston.
Indika
Indika is my very favorite Indian
restaurant in Houston.. I suppose technically, the food is
probably more of an Indian fusion, or perhaps nouveau Indian cuisine?
At any rate the food is spectacular and I am always impressed with
the unusual flavors and food s that come together on my
plate.
Ibiza
I really love Charles Clark's cusine.
I think we share a similar ethos and honest approach to food.
I especially like his lamb shanks.
Last
Concert Cafe
- This is one of the oldest restaurants
in Houston. The Last Concert features great Tex-Mex food,
cold beer, and rocking great music. I personally recommend
the cheeseburgers and chocolate flan.
Irma's
- Irma's is a real Houston landmark. Possibly some of the
best Mexican food I have ever eaten in Houston. She has no
menu so be sure to ask what is being served.
Lola
Savannah Coffee - Lola Savannah arguably supplies the
best fresh roasted coffee in Houston. Duke Furrh imports raw
beans from all over the world and roasts them to perfection.
They are masterful at creating custom blends and Duke is a strong
supporter of the arts and community.
Cool
Art Links
I
am not sure what I would say about Melissa's work. It is
demanding in some ways, requires you to think, sometimes playful,
sometimes frightening, always worth a second look.
Diverse
Works Art Space - Diverse works is an provides an
interesting collection of artists studios, galleries and a
performance space.
Mother
Dog Studios - Mother Dog Studios is home
to many local artists, adjacent to Dakota
Lofts and just a stone throw away from the Dharma.
FotoFest
- This is a very cool bi-annual exhibit and celebration of the
very best in photography from around the world.
Kennon Photography
- Kennon Evett's work is spectacular. I am
constantly astounded by his artistry.

Beat
Museum - Cool little place in Monterey,CA that sells
beat books, T-shirts, etc.
Housing
Dakota
Lofts - This is the real deal. Real lofts in an
old converted warehouse. Cool neighbors, and an art gallery
in the foyer.
Sterret
Street - This is a brand new development
of warehouse district town homes.
Reggie
Bowman Real Estate - Reggie
Bowman has probably been selling real estate in downtown Houston
longer than most of his competitors have been alive. Reggie
is a veritable goldmine of information about downtown properties
and a charming guy to work with.
Sandra
Gunn Properties
- Sandra Gunn was aptly
named. She is a big gun in downtown properties and
relentless supporter of the warehouse district.
M
Architects - Michael Morton and
his associates prove that good architecture and good art are
inseparable. The world needs more people who take their
craft so seriously.
